Cambodian Athletes Awarded Over $780,000 for International Competition Success

Phnom Penh: The Cambodian government awarded over $780,000 USD (approximately 3.199 billion riels) to athletes who secured bronze, silver, and gold medals at various international sporting events.

The award ceremony took place at the Peace Palace on the afternoon of February 26, 2024, and was presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet. The ceremony celebrated athletes' successes in events such as the Southeast Asian Championships, Asian Championships, World Championships, and the 20th Southeast Asian University Games.

Recipients of the awards shared their joy and gratitude, feeling encouraged and motivated by the recognition. Khon Chan Sopheak Neath, a notable Vovinam athlete, expressed immense happiness for the opportunity to receive the prize money directly from the Prime Minister, appreciating the Royal Government's support for athletes.

Prime Minister Hun Manet lauded the concerted efforts of the Ministry of Education's leadership, the National Sports Federation's President, coaches, and all athletes for their dedication and commitment to bringing honor to Cambodia. Reflecting on the past, the Prime Minister noted the significance of this era for Cambodian sports, contrasting it with a time when Cambodians could only watch international athletes on TV without the chance to compete or win medals themselves. He emphasized that the current achievements are a testament to the peace and stability the country enjoys.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Cambodian athletes would continue to strive for excellence and secure even more victories in future competitions.

A recent report from the Minister of Education highlighted that Cambodia has participated in international competitions across 11 sports disciplines, including jujitsu, taekwondo, WT, swimming, and sailing. Additionally, Cambodia sent athletes to compete in five sports at the 20th ASEAN University Games in Thailand, securing a total of 30 gold, 42 silver, and 60 bronze medals.
